YELLOW PAGES DIRECTORY PAGINATION

The directory pagination software utilises all of the power of the OASYS publishing system. In addition, it provides a complete set of automated facilities for the production of the most demanding 'yellow' and 'white' page telephone directories. Advertisement placement rules are obeyed with fillers, continued line, tell-tales, cross-references and indexes, all created in less than a second per page.

The unique balance between automatic (batch) and interactive (place/drag any ad or listing manually) pagination yields production volumes in excess of 200 finished pages per hour. And by finished, we mean the book looks exactly like the product you envisioned.

Batch and Interactive Pagination

The Miles 33 batch pagination engine is blisteringly fast (less than a second per page) and does a good job in meeting the publisher's need to follow rules and fit ad placement schemes. However, nothing upsets an advertiser more than to find out that their advert position within a heading is incorrect. The key element to Miles 33's success is being able to interactively adjust the batch pagination to ensure that the book precisely follows the touching rules and formatting styles of the publisher.

Flexible Interfacing Options

Miles 33 focuses only on back-end pagination, but the system is flexible such that it will accommodate input in file formats such as XML, SGML, proprietary formats and from other front end systems such as Polylogics' DIAD system. Most recently Miles 33 has enhanced its interface with the DIAD system, simplifying setup procedures and allowing typographic and style parameters captured on the DIAD system to be automatically applied on the Miles 33 system.

Automatic Placement of Page Elements

Another benefit that makes the system so usable is that regardless of whether you are batch paginating or moving ads interactively, all the automatic flow features that are affected by the placement of an advert work the same way. This includes automatically generating tell-tales and thumb-tabs, classification and listing continuation headers and footers, cross references, spacing, and vertical justification of columns. This means that all the user has to worry about is the placement of adverts, since all of the tedious re-flow options are happening automatically.

Fillers

Fillers - always a necessary evil within any directory and usually a real problem area for the pagination process - are handled by a unique filler clipboard, allowing the operator to place fillers (manually or automatically) based on size. The user doesn't have to worry about the content of a filler at this stage, just its size. Populating the fillers with content is a post pagination process, which can cycle through filler items based on content, frequency, priority, classification, etc. This fulfills an industry demand for publishers to be able to sell their filler space, or give it away as a sales incentive knowing that the Miles 33 system will allow tight control over filler content and frequency.

Sophisticated Cross Referencing Schemes

Another requirement is to be able to provide the directory user with more information to locate the listings and adverts they want to find quickly. A highly sophisticated cross-referencing scheme exists for tieing virtually any element in the database to any number of other elements. “See ad” lines are user definable so different styles can be achieved:

Miles 33 also allows cross-referencing between sections. For example, if the white pages are also produced on the Miles 33 system, those listings can contain references to the owners yellow page advertisements.

Indexes

When the book is paginated, another post pagination process will automatically create an index of classification headings. One Miles 33 customer, who lists classification headings in both English and Spanish, automatically creates an English only index, and a separate Spanish / English index.
