Miles 33 has created one of the most efficient page make-up processes for yellow page directories, shortening production times and allowing sales deadlines to stay open longer for more revenue.
The directory pagination software utilizes all of the power of the OASYS publishing system. In addition, it provides a complete set of automated facilities for the production of the most demanding 'yellow' and 'white' page telephone directories. Advertisement placement rules are obeyed with fillers, continued lines, tell-tales, cross-references and indexes, all created in less than a second per page.
The unique balance between automatic (batch) and interactive (place/drag any ad or listing manually) pagination yields production volumes in excess of 200-300 finished pages per hour. And by finished, we mean the book looks exactly like the product you envisioned.
The Miles 33 batch pagination engine is blisteringly fast (less than a second per page) and does an excellent job meeting the publisher's need to follow touching rules and fit ad placement schemes. However, nothing upsets an advertiser more than to find out that their ad position within a heading is incorrect. The key element to Miles 33's success is being able to interactively adjust the batch pagination to ensure that the book precisely follows the touching rules and formatting styles of the publisher.
The system is modular and flexible and will accommodate input not only from its own front-end systems, but also in file formats such as XML, SGML, proprietary formats and from other front-end systems such as Polylogics’ DIAD system and 3L’s CORE system. Most recently Miles 33 has enhanced its interface, simplifying setup procedures and allowing typographic and style parameters captured on the front-end system to be automatically applied on the Miles 33 system.
Another benefit that makes the system so usable is that regardless of whether you are batch paginating or moving ads interactively, all the automatic flow features that are affected by the placement of an ad work the same way. This includes automatically generating tell-tales and thumb-tabs, classification and listing continuation headers and footers, cross references, spacing, and vertical justification of columns. This means that all the user has to worry about is the placement of adverts, since all of the tedious re-flow options are happening automatically.
The Directory System software supports both PDF and EPS workflows. PDF is the recommended workflow, allowing for smaller file sizes, which equates to faster output times and a more robust pre-flighting process. OPI is supported.
During output, all of the page components are assembled and output to either a single file or a file per page. Fonts are downloaded, graphics are embedded and the text is output. All of the page furniture is included. Bleeds can be turned on or off as can the background tint, often used for printing Yellow Pages on white paper. Colour separations can be generated if required. Output file naming is configurable. A post process option allows files to be automatically sent for preflight, proofing or for final output, including direct-to-plate.
Miles 33 can also provide a fully integrated Ad Management system to streamline the management of the creative process by increasing operator productivity, and reducing the customer proofing cycle with a new customer web portal with sales access. Miles 33 Ad Management modules are integrated with QuarkXPress, InDesign CS3 and CS4, Corel Draw, Multi-Ad Creator and Adobe’s Fireworks for digital ad creation.
