About Miles 33

Miles 33 has been a leading supplier of software, support and consultancy services to the publishing, legal and finance sectors across the globe for more than 30 years. Since its establishment in 1976, the company has grown to become the largest British supplier of publishing systems with over 300 installations in the United Kingdom.

In fact, six of the UK’s top ten regional press publishers are Miles 33 customers, including Trinity Mirror, Newsquest Media Group, Johnston Press, Northcliffe Newspapers Group, Guardian Media Group and Iliffe News and Media.

Miles 33’s Unique Sales Model

Unlike other systems, where 90 percent of the purchase price is paid before the system goes live, no license fees are due until after a Miles 33 system goes live. Furthermore, the Miles 33 license is an annual license which includes support and maintenance. The only up front cost in acquiring a Miles 33 system is the cost for implementation services, a hugely beneficial model that dramatically reduces the initial investment in new technology. Furthermore, the model is flexible as the annual fee can be adjusted, up or down, at any time, as your business changes.

With Miles 33, you only pay for what you use

Its growth in the newspaper and magazine publishing market can be attributed to many factors, including a strong, comprehensive product offering catering to the many diverse aspects of the publishing industry. In addition, an experienced management team with a combined total of almost 150 years of industry experience, low staff turnover and a unique sales model have all made Miles 33 an extremely attractive proposition for many publishers.

The product portfolio is extensive, covering advertising management, financial management, customer relationship management, content management, workflow management, web and print publishing, production, ad and page tracking, wire feed management and customer self service solutions, broadcast and circulation and subscription management.

The company’s solid financial performance and clear potential for expansion was recognized by investment company European Capital, S.A. SICAR, an affiliate of American Capital Ltd, a $14bn assets under management, global investment company and in June 2007 it finalized a deal with Miles 33 that resulted in it becoming the majority shareholder.

This pivotal change in company ownership and structure provided Miles 33 with a solid financial foundation on which to execute its strategy for consolidating the publishing systems supplier marketplace through careful acquisition of companies offering products and services complementary to the core Miles 33 suite.

This ideology has seen Miles 33 finalise multiple key acquisitions. In February 2008, it purchased Datamatix, a leading provider of digital self service advertising products to the UK publishing industry. This acquisition resulted in two new products being added to the Miles 33 portfolio – Property Wizard and Motor Wizard.

Developed in close collaboration with some of the UK’s largest publishers, these two products comprise a suite of modern, stylish and powerful PC-based applications dedicated to making the production of automobile and real estate classifieds more streamlined and automated.

Auto dealers and real estate agents can easily compose print ready advertising content using templates. The final result is delivered to the publisher as complete and final artwork, virtually eliminating in-house errors. Production costs are decreased and advertisers are given tighter control over the creation and delivery of their advertising content.

Miles’ second acquisition was finalized in April 2008 with the purchase of net-linx Publishing Solutions, a long time provider of publishing systems to the newspaper, magazine and wire services industries.

Established in 1999, net-linx Publishing Solutions was the result of a merger between three well established American based publishing solutions suppliers: System Integrators Inc (SII) of Sacramento (California), CText of Ann Arbor (Michigan) and CompuText of Houston (Texas). With a rich heritage in the publishing systems supply industry and a strong customer support infrastructure, the company was seen as an extremely attractive proposition and its acquisition resulted in an expansion of Miles 33’s customer base to include markets outside the traditional Miles 33 footprint in the UK and US, such as mainland Europe, South America, Asia Pacific and the Middle East.

In February 2009, Miles 33 acquired Televisual Data Limited, providers of the browser-based editorial workflow and content management software called AssetFlow. One of AssetFlow’s main credentials is its multilingual capabilities. The solution supports many non-Latin script languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu and Vietnamese. The solution has many installations in the Middle and Far East as well as in the UK.

In March 2010, acquired MGB Systems Limited and its industry leading products for Circulation, Subscription and Free Newspaper Distribution. Originally formed in 1990, MGB has over 20 installations of its product suite Quantum across England, Scotland Wales and Ireland and has a wide product range which covers Canvassing, Marketing, Direct Delivery, Subscriptions, Reader Clubs, Free Newspaper Distribution, National and Local Leaflet Booking, Newsagent and Wholesaler Publishing and Digital Street Mapping.

In June 2010, Miles 33 completed the acquisition of Tera Digital Publishing, the Milan, Italy-based provider of editorial content management systems. Founded in 1990, Tera has grown it installed base to over 300 customers. The impressive international customer base of Tera has also expanded to include broadcasters such as Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) which is the Dutch international public service broadcaster. Through radio, television, mobile platforms and the internet they keep millions of people informed about developments in the Netherlands, Europe and the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

These acquisitions have seen Miles 33’s installation base increase to more than 800 globally. In addition to its existing offices in Bracknell, England and Norwalk, Connecticut, Miles 33 also has offices in Sacramento, California, Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Milan, Italy and Mt. Eliza, Australia.
